Salt & Light
Share
Matthew 5:13–14 “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”
Ordinary but Essential
Salt may seem ordinary, but in Jesus’ time it was precious. It preserved food from decay and added flavor to the bland. Light may seem common, but in the darkness it becomes indispensable. Jesus uses these two simple pictures to describe who we are as His followers: salt of the earth and light of the world.
You may feel ordinary, but in Christ you carry an essential role.
Preserving What Matters
Salt works quietly but powerfully. It slows decay and preserves what’s good. In the same way, the presence of believers in the world preserves truth, goodness, and righteousness. When we live faithfully, our influence pushes back corruption and brings the flavor of Christ into every space we occupy.
Light, on the other hand, cannot be hidden. It exposes what is dark and guides the way forward. Our lives, lit by Christ, are meant to shine openly - not drawing attention to ourselves, but pointing others to Him.
Living as Salt and Light
We don’t have to be flashy or famous to make an impact. Salt works in small doses. Light shines simply by being present. Our daily obedience - loving others, speaking truth, showing grace - is how we live out our calling as salt and light.
When we live this way, people notice. And more importantly, they are drawn not to us, but to the Savior who lives within us.
This Week’s Challenge
Ask yourself: Where can I be salt? Where can I shine light? Choose one simple action this week - an encouragement, a truth spoken in love, or an act of service - and do it intentionally.
A Prayer to Shine
Lord, make my life salt that preserves and light that shines. Help me live in such a way that others see You in me. Amen.
