Roots That Hold

Roots That Hold

Jeremiah 17:7–8  “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

Anchored Beneath the Surface

Storms have a way of testing what’s hidden. A tree may look strong on the outside, but the moment fierce winds rise, we discover whether its roots run deep - or shallow. The same is true for us.

Life will bring heat, drought, and storms that shake us. Without deep roots, our faith becomes fragile, easily withered by pressure, temptation, or disappointment. But Jeremiah paints a picture of the believer whose trust is in the Lord: like a tree planted by water, steady and fruitful no matter the season.

Digging Deeper in Trust

Roots don’t grow overnight. They deepen slowly, day after day, hidden beneath the soil. Our spiritual roots grow the same way - through trust, prayer, scripture, and obedience in the small moments. When the world shouts fear, faith quietly digs deeper. When drought comes, the rooted remain nourished.

God’s promise isn’t that we’ll avoid dry seasons, but that with Him, our leaves can stay green even when everything around us feels barren.

A Life That Bears Fruit

The evidence of deep roots is fruit that endures. Peace in anxiety. Joy in sorrow. Hope in the waiting. These fruits don’t come from our strength, but from His Spirit working through those who remain planted in Him.

When our confidence is in Christ, our lives become testimonies - not because storms don’t come, but because we remain standing when they do.

This Week’s Challenge

Take ten extra minutes each day this week to “water your roots” - whether through prayer, scripture, or worship. Use that time to trust God more deeply in one area of your life that feels dry.

A Prayer for Strength

Father, anchor my life in You. Grow my roots deep into Your Word and Your love, so that when storms come, I remain steady and fruitful. Amen.
